Late summer, fall, early winter 2011

7/30/2011
Sharpnose sharks, black sea bass, bluefish, and a lone barracuda at the nearshore wrecks and artificial reefs, and we are still catching red drum in the surf.
The fishing action has been steady.

                                                                            Kirt's 30" red on 7/26

Fished in the rain all day. On the morning trip the sea state was rather iffy, but we managed a nice red at a nearshore wreck and a couple of more in the surf. On the afternoon trip we targeted sharks, but the bite was slow and the rain was coming down harder, so we headed for the hill after an hour or two.

7/24/2011
Surf fishing has been hit and miss. Some  locations are full of fish and others there are none. Lots of sharks in the rivers and artificial reefs.

7/23 This was the only red drum of the morning, but it was this young anglers first saltwater fish ever.

Early July spanish mackeral                  Late June, Gilbert's (US Marine Corps!) 20lb 'Cuda

 6/29/2011
The tarpon are definitly here. This morning in Fripp Inlet there was a small school (5-10 fish) of 100+lb fish with some bottleness dolphin working a school of big mullet. It was sight to see! We tried casting large popping plugs, live mullet, dead mullet, etc into the melee but no takers. The ocean was rather rough today, but we caught sharks and 5 spanish mackeral just out of Trenchards Inlet.

6/21/2011
Lots of 1lb blue fish at the Savannah wreck, and 5 red drum in the surf. Three of the reds were 6 or 7 lbs. No big schools of spanish mackeral yet. Another boat caught a tarpon in Trenchards Inlet off of Bull Point. Also took a family shelling at Bull Point. They found some awesome shells!

6/17/2011
Black sea bass, sharks, bluefish, ladyfish, barracuda, spanish mackeral, and a 100+lb nurse shark (released) were the highligts of the week.

6/18/2011
Epic red drum bite in the surf late Saturday afteroon at dead low tide. Around 20 reds caught and released using fresh cut mullet.

5/20/2011
Big wedding at Fripp this weekend! The groom chartered three boats; lots of black sea bass, sharks, and a few triggerfish. A 30lb barracuda we hooked skyed 10 feet out of the water and almost jumped in the boat with us.

5/7/2011
Had an opportunity to crew on large boat headed to the gulfstream (55 miles one-way). Dolphins, grouper, and amberjacks. Lots of fun but a very long day!

01/02/2011
Black sea bass galore from 5 miles to 30 miles out. It's been a windy, rainy, and cold November & December, so fishing days have been limited. This is a great time, however, to go beach combing on the remote islands for shells.

10/26/2010 Lots of red drum in the sound, creeks, and surf. Fish are anywhere from  14" to 45".

  • 10/14/2010  The fall run of adult red drum is on. We're averaging 5 to 8 25lb-35lb fish a tide cycle.
  • This has been a great fall for cast netting shrimp. The shrimp have been big and plentiful, and I've spent more time filling my freezer with shrimp than chasing fish.
  • 9/11/10 Walked the salt marsh flats for an hour at high tide. Saw a dozen or so reds tailing and caught/released one.
  • 9/9/10 Fish the surfed for a couple of hours and then the wreck. Ended the day with 2 black drum, 4 weakfish trout, and a dozen reds.
  • 9/5/10 A couple of nice reds and several weakfish trout at a nearshore wreck.
  •
  • Bubba and Ray with a nice red
  • 8/27/10  Back to the surf again; my 80-year-old dad was really stoked about the fish we caught earlier in the week. 15 red drum and one black drum.
  • 8/24/10  Sunset surf fishing trip with my father, brother, and brother-in-law. 18 red drum, most between 25"-35".
  • 8/22/10 Ventured 30 miles offshore to the north hole area, lots of nice black sea bass and trigger fish.

8/12/10. 15 or so reds in the surf. The big late summer/fall fish have arrived; we had several in the 25"-35" range

  • 8/10/10. Sharpnose sharks, one barracuda, a short flounder, ladyfish, bluefish, and a 3lb spanish.
  • 8/3/10. Hit the surf after lunch with a couple of guys from Kentucky. An hour and a half and 5 red drum later we ventured offshore. A big school of spanish mackeral was feeding our the surface, and we boated around 20. We rigged a spanish for king mackeral and ended up with a 7' shark that was around 100lbs.
